Dan Levin is a Philadelphia based improvisational folk multi-instrumentalist and philosopher. His background is in free jazz and avant garde music and he has recently begun to apply the principals of those forms to American folk music. He came over for 30 minutes one morning and improvised this piece which was captured using one microphone to one track on cassette.

Chris Cicala is a songwriter, guitar player, percussionist, and a wrestling school dropout (for real). He lives in Effort, Pennsylvania. His music reminds me a lot of Jonathan Richman's early work in this dark comedic tale of romantic frustration. He sort of reminds me of The Sonics, too. He sort of reminds me of a lot of stuff but he blends it all into his own unique mix.

Lobo Marino are a tribal-drone-diy-folk duo out of Richmond, VA. They only live in Richmond one month out of each year, though, because they are on tour so much. All that traveling around and playing out really shows in this performance of a Hindu prayer song. They are backed up on this song by Dandelion from Bowl of Dust & Co.

The one constant member of Bowl of Dust & Co. is cosmic-folk troubador Kyle Klipowicz. He's based out of Chicago but he tours the country quite frequently, spreading his message of Goddess love. On this track he is backed up by Lobo Marino (the two groups were on tour together at the time of these recordings).

Insomniac Folklore is an anarcho folk group from Portland, OR. They tour a lot on the DIY folk circuit and have a captivating live show. This is part of an entire album they recorded one afternoon last month after playing a show in my living room the previous night.

Maybe we've been recording too many folk punk troubadours. Is such a thing possible? Maybe I need to find new ways to describe the folks I record. At any rate, here's Oklahoma Car Crash (who is actually from Virginia). He stayed at my house a couple weeks ago after playing a show here in Stroudsburg and he recorded a couple of songs for the comp. This is a new version of one of his older songs.

Another great pop tune from your favorite wrestling-school-dropout, Chris Cicala. Jonathan Richman's bastard son.
